Never Show Up Empty-Handed
Thursday before Memorial Day. You've been invited somewhere. Now what do you bring?
I have a rule — I never arrive empty-handed. Not because of etiquette (though yes, that too), but because hosting is genuinely one of the most underappreciated things a person can do. Someone cleaned their house, planned the menu, chilled the rosé, and said come over. The least we can do is show up with something thoughtful in hand.
So I broke it down. Because the gift that's right for the friend with the stunning outdoor table is not the same gift that's right for the host who has literally everything. Here's how I'm thinking about it this weekend.
The goal is never to show up with the most expensive thing. It’s to show up with the thing that feels considered.
For the Host With the Beautiful Kitchen
This is the person whose counters are clear, whose olive oil is already good, and who will actually use what you bring. Go functional, go quality, go things that look as good as they perform.
Cluster of Nine Round Serving Bowls
Nine organic nickel bowls that connect into one sculptural serving piece. Fill them with olives, nuts, pistachios, whatever — it doesn't matter, it's going to look incredible on the table either way. This is the hostess gift that becomes the centerpiece.
Brightland Olive Oil
I've written about this before and I'll write about it again. Beautiful bottle, exceptional oil, works for every host on every occasion. My hostess gift LBD.
Salt Sphere + Maldon Salt Tin
A walnut salt cellar that does double duty as a beautiful object and smart storage, paired with the finishing salt that belongs inside it. This is the kind of thing people ask about every time they walk into the kitchen. Order fast — it sells out constantly.

Maldon Sea Salt Flakes
Equestrian Trio Condiment Set
Three polished bowls connected by an equestrian bit handle. Functional and completely sculptural — the kind of thing that lives on a table permanently because it’s too beautiful to put away. This is the gift that makes someone gasp a little when they open it. I love this so much, I’m linking both the nickel and the gold.

Marble & Mango Wood Charcuterie Board
White marble meets warm mango wood, with a concealed pull-out drawer that houses the brass serving tools until the moment calls for them. On sale right now for $170 (down from $310) — and it's the kind of thing that lives on the counter permanently because it's too beautiful to put away.

Jonathan Adler Eve Cocktail Napkin Holder
A polished brass cocktail napkin holder with a sculpted hand as the weight. It's surreal and chic and the perfect addition to her table. (Sold out on Jonathan Adler directly, so I linked via Mytheresa)

For the Friend With the Perfect Outdoor Table
She has the linen napkins, the citronella candles, and the good melamine. What she needs is something that feels special enough to earn a permanent spot on the table.
Estelle Colored Wine Glasses
Hand-blown in Poland, jewel-toned, absolutely gorgeous. She will think of you every time she sets the table.
Juliska Isabella Acrylic Tumbler Set
Poolside, patio, backyard — these blue tumblers go everywhere and somehow still look chic doing it. A set of four for $64, dishwasher safe, and the kind of thing the host will use all summer long.

Linen Cocktail Napkins
Mark Graham Cocktail Napkins are my go-to: cotton, fun prints, come tied with a ribbon, and are ready to hand over. They'll be on the table within ten minutes of your arrival.
Bogey & Byrd Pickleball Paddle Cocktail Napkins
They're shaped like actual paddles. I promise this is cuter in person than it sounds. For the host who plays, this is an instant conversation starter before anyone's even had a drink.
Do Your Italian Spritz Kit
Everything they need to make a proper aperitivo moment this weekend: the bottle, the infusion blends, the strainer, and the instructions. You're not just giving a drink, you're giving a whole Italian summer vibe in a box.
For the Host Who Already Has Everything
This is the tricky one. She doesn't need another candle. She certainly doesn't need another bottle of Whispering Angel. Think unexpected, think experiential, think something she'd never quite buy herself.
Aesop Resurrection Hand Duo
Hand wash and lotion, beautifully packaged, smells like a very good decision. I put this in a guest bathroom once, and people asked me about it for a year.
Juliska Puro Glass Pitcher
Mouth-blown glass with a subtle shimmer and the texture of rumpled linen. Beautiful enough to leave on the table, practical enough for batch cocktails, sangria, or a big pitcher of water with citrus.
The Favorites Marbella Light My Fire Matches
White-tipped matches in a matte white marble vessel with a striker strip on the base. Sits on a mantle, a coffee table, next to a candle — and just looks right wherever you put it.

Hostess Gifts Under $75 That Still Feel Expensive
Because thoughtful always feels more expensive.
Nairobi Matt White Bone Photo Frame
Natural bone, no two exactly alike, with the kind of warm organic variation that makes it look like it came from a very well-traveled home. Slip a favorite photo in before you wrap it, and suddenly you've given two gifts.

Jonathan Adler Mariposa Coasters
Baby blue porcelain with real gold butterfly motifs, already boxed and ready to hand over. $95 for a set of four — and right now 20% off with code SUNNY20 through Memorial Day.

Bubble Candle Dish + Coconut Papaya Votive
A smoky sculpted glass dish paired with the most summer-in-a-glass candle Voluspa makes. Together they feel like something you’d find in a very chic beach house. Under $40 together, looks like you spent twice that.

Savannah Bee Blossom to Bottle Honey Set
Savannah Bee Blossom to Bottle Honey Set — Six of the world's finest varietal honeys — Acacia, Lavender, Orange Blossom, Wildflower and more — packaged in a box that looks like a beautiful book and opens like a gift. An Oprah Favorite Thing, and honestly, she's right.

Rattan & Matte Steel Cheese Tools Set
A spreader, slicer, and server with woven rattan handles and matte steel blades. $45, looks like it came from a very good kitchen shop, and pairs perfectly with the charcuterie board above if you want to go bigger.

Things That Get You Invited Back
These are the gifts people talk about. The ones that come up in conversation weeks later. Bring one of these and your invitation to the next thing is basically guaranteed.
We're Not Really Strangers
A card game built around real conversation — the kind that happens after the second glass of wine when everyone starts actually talking. My go-to for any host who entertains a crowd.
A Coffee Table Book
Not a generic one. One that means something — about a place she loves, an artist she follows, a world she wants to live in. Take the extra five minutes to make it personal. This is one of my favorites!
Hario Mizudashi Cold Brew Coffee Pot
For the host who runs on iced coffee all summer. Fill it the night before, wake up to cold brew. Sleek Japanese glass design that looks good enough to leave on the counter. Under $35, and honestly, one of the most useful things on this list.

I put together a full ShopMy collection with everything above — plus a few extras if you want to go bigger. → SHOP THE HOSTESS EDIT
Happy Memorial Day, everyone. Bring something thoughtful. Stay a little too long. Eat outside if you can.

P.S. If you're the one hosting this weekend, you deserve something on this list too. Treat yourself and don't feel even slightly bad about it.
